Lorica SegmentataHand Forged Quartermaster Segmentata I now offer a hand forged Lorica Segmentata in steel worked hot. In the spirit of historical authenticity I use a charcoal fired forge, not coal, not gas. All plates are hand hammered to shape. Holes for attaching hardware and straps are hand punched, not drilled. The finished product comes off the forge dark, "forge blued" if you will and displays hammering marks just like the originals.These segmentatas are made from larger gauge steel stock hand forged to a thickness of from 16-g to 18g. Hand made brass fittings are tempered for strength. Lobate hinges are doubled. All buckle strap fittings are fully functional. All leather straps are made from shoulder and/or side, not "natural" or finished leather, never belly leather, and never ever suede. I use copper rivets, not brass or steel, to attach all hardware and leather staps. Nor are the straps crushed from heavy riveting. Rivets are set in such a way as to allow the straps to have a minimum of play for proper fit and movement thus improving the duarability of the straps and the fuctionality of the armor. These are durable fully functional replicas of military equipment are reliable enough to use for years of full time Roman re-enactment and SCA-style war combat.
